Care for the Caregiver

at 11:55AM, 1:55PM, and 3:55PM

Caring for a loved one can be very rewarding, but it is also very demanding--both emotionally and physically. In this episode, Suzanne's guest Roxanne Galvin, RN, BSN, talks about resources for caregivers to turn to.

Roxanne says that it's very important to first have a clear understanding of the patient's situation. Be sure to speak with the patient's doctor and other health care staff to learn as much as you can. Ask questions such as: What are the patients abilities and limitations? What medications are being used, and what side effects could they cause? What is the prognosis of the illness or injury? When you have a full understanding of the situation, you willl be better prepared to help your loved one during his or her illness.

Many caregivers find themselves constantly giving, and they forget the importance of taking care of themselves. Take time to exercise, eat a healthy diet, and make sure you get to do some enjoyable activities like gardening or going out with friends for a quick meal. See if you can hire a home health aide to assist as needed. In addition to giving you a break, these professionals can teach you many important things, like how to avoid straining your back when moving the patient.
